Objectives

This course addresses the practical challenges that managers face as they seek to build, upgrade and exploit knowledge assets, both within the firm and in alliance partners, virtual organisations and virally. Using participants’ own organisations as cases, participants will explore how can knowledge contribute and enhance SD as well as exploring various knowledge management development scenarios. Participants act as consultants to each other as they explore the question: What is good management in an information-rich world? The course will also enable you to critically analyse the characteristic features of the knowledge-based economy, and debate its impact on management practices and other aspects of organizational life. This includes the ability to differentiate organizations and networks according to different “knowledge-based” taxonomies. The course will consider new approaches to managing learning processes in the organization, including developments such as KM and novel organisational structures that have emerged to coordinate knowledge-work activity.

What Would you Learn

  • Understand what is KM and why it is important for your organization.
  • Outline the benefits the KM framework will allow your organization to do.
  • Understand the controversies in KM and the key issues in the debate on KM, including the methods and implications of KM on competitiveness and costs.
  • Identify and examine the objectives, advantages, drawbacks, models, stages and requirements of KM and how your organization can start KM project/initiative and who will be involved.
  • Distinguish between KM, knowledge transfer and diffusion.
  • Develop a reflexive understanding of learning processes at the level of individuals and the role of human resource development in facilitating learning outocmes.
  • Participants will also become familiar with the key concepts and theories relating to the nature and process of knowledge creation and transfer within organizations and the wider economy and apply these concepts and theories to complex problems and practical situations presented in the workshop.
  • Develop interpersonal skills through the use of group presentations, discussions and exercises.
