A striking feature of modern organisational life, especially in these dynamically changing times, is the continual quest by managers for sustainable knowledge management (KM) platforms to power efficiency and superior performance. This probably explains the recent surge of interests, both theoretically and practically, in the dialectics of KM as an approach to achieving organisational excellence. Arguably, KM is not a recent phenomenon and, indeed, can be traced way back to anthropogenesis. However, ever since the beginning of modern science, the field has witnessed revolutionary incursions by academics as well as practitioners, and remains a major preoccupation by managers from diverse organisational backgrounds and for all sorts of purposes or circumstances. Whilst remarkable advances have been made to enrich our understanding of KM, either by extending its theoretic and discursive properties or developing situated understandings of its temporal and spatial dimensions, empirical evidence paradoxically continues to reveal growing complexities and tensions as strategists look to the domain for solutions to the problematic of ‘organisational excellence’. This book, Smart KM Model, affords refreshing insights and, indeed, a breath of fresh air in a rather cluttered and sometimes confusing domain. The approach, in its simplicity, de-reifies, reconstructs and resituates the syncretism and hegemonic representations of KM in a contemporary setting. The excellent case studies used by the authors to embellish discussions are not only insightful but also demonstrate the transformative potentials of KM to deliver organisation excellence, if strategically embedded. I regard this book as an essential guide for senior managers and policy makers. It offers a strong practical rationale of what works and procedures that leads to excellent outcomes. Its particular strength rests in the insights that it offers into KM processes; the challenges in introducing effective KM regime and how to overcome them.
